From a solitary life in a foreign land, a heartfelt longing for the cherished people in Japan grows achingly. Despite conversing through devices at hand, the only aspect that can be touched is their digitized presence.

Even in this modern age where communication technology has evolved, enabling dialogues that transcend physical distances, the yearning for the sensation of "physical touch" remains unresolved. This might be evidence of our instinctual desire for the presence of another's physical body.

The idea emerged to extend and materialize photographs. Those far away, those who have departed this world, and the great figures etched in history. With the use of AI and 3D printers, it's possible to recreate their images as sculptures based on a single photograph without the need for a 360° scan, allowing us to touch them.

Of course, it's evident that achieving a complete replica is impossible. Various "layers" exist between the subject of the photograph and the sculpted artwork, creating differences between the subject, the photograph, and the sculpture. These layers give rise to subtle conversions and errors through digital techniques that we ordinarily can't perceive. However, by crafting sculptures using photographs, by making Photographic Sculptures, these conversions and errors manifest materially, enabling us to perceive them.

Due to the layers, the artwork becomes somewhat detached from the subject itself. Nevertheless, by directly touching it, we might discover something within the image that couldn't be sensed through the photograph alone.

異国での孤独な生活から、日本の大切な人々への思いが切なく募る。手元のデバイスを介して会話するも、触れることができるのは、データ化された彼らの姿だけ。

コミュニケーション技術が進化し、物理的な距離を超えた対話が可能となった現代でも、"実在の触感"への切望は未だに解消されていない。それは我々が本能的に相手の肉体を求めている証拠かもしれない。

写真を拡張させ、立体化するアイデアが生まれた。遠くにいる彼ら、この世を去った彼ら、歴史に名を刻む偉人たち。AIと3Dプリンターを用いれば、360°スキャンせずとも、１枚の写真を基に彼らのイメージを彫刻として再現し、それに触れることができる。

もちろん、完全な再現が不可能であることは明らかだ。写真の被写体と彫刻作品の間には様々な"レイヤー"が存在し、それによって被写体、写真、彫刻の間に差が生じる。このレイヤーは普段我々が知覚できない、デジタル技術による微妙な変換や誤差を生み出す。だが、写真を用いた彫刻、Photographic Sculptureを作ることで、変換や誤差が物質的に現れ、我々はそれらを知覚することができるようになる。

レイヤーにより、作品は被写体そのものからかけ離れる。しかし、それに直接触れることで、写真だけでは感じ取れないイメージの持つ何かを見つけ出すことができるかもしれない。
